Gregg Berhalter Returns as Head Coach of US Men's National Soccer Team

Former Columbus Crew Coach to Lead USMNT Once More

Gregg Berhalter, the former head coach of the Columbus Crew, has been reappointed as head coach of the United States Men's National Soccer Team (USMNT). This announcement was made by US Soccer on Friday.

Berhalter's Previous Tenure

Berhalter previously coached the USMNT from 2018 to 2022, during which time he led the team to the semifinals of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Before joining the USMNT, he was the head coach of the Columbus Crew from 2014 to 2018, leading the team to the MLS Cup championship in 2020.

USMNT's Coaching History

The USMNT has a history of hiring notable players as coaches, including Jurgen Klinsmann. However, their experiences have varied greatly. Berhalter's resume stands out among potential candidates for the position.

The appointment of Berhalter comes after the USMNT's disappointing performance in the Nations League, which saw them lose to Honduras and draw with El Salvador. The team will look to rebound under Berhalter's leadership as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
